Watch Band Size Guide: How to Find Your Perfect Fit

To find your watch band size, you need two measurements: the width and the length. The width is the gap between your watch's lugs, in millimetres. The length is the total length of both strap pieces, without the buckle. Check the size printed on the back of your old strap, or measure the lugs with a ruler. Then pick Short, Standard, Extra Long, XXL or XXXL to suit your wrist. Not every band comes in every length, so check the lengths offered on the band you like. Apple Watch bands go by the case size engraved on the back of the watch.

How to find your perfect watch band size

This short video walks through both measurements: how to find your band width from your old strap or your watch lugs, and how to choose the right length for your wrist.

Width first, then length. Most watches take a 16 to 24 mm band, and Bandini carries every width from 6 to 30 mm, in lengths from Short to XXXL.
Step 1

Find your width: the number on the back of your old strap, or the gap between the lugs in mm.

Step 2

Find your length: measure your old strap without the buckle, or measure your wrist.

Step 3

Check the size chart on the band you like before you order. Sizes vary by model.

Step 1: How to find your watch band width (lug width)

Band width is the most important measurement, because the band has to fit exactly between your watch's lugs. Watch band sizes are given in millimetres (mm), and this number is the same as your watch's lug width.

How to find your watch band width: the size printed on the underside of an old leather strap, and a ruler measuring 20mm between the watch lugs

1. Check your old strap

Many straps, especially leather ones, have the size printed on the underside near the watch end. If yours shows a number such as 18, 20 or 22, that is the width to order.

2. Measure between the lugs

No number? Use a ruler or calipers to measure the distance between the lugs of your watch, inside edge to inside edge, in millimetres. That gap is your band size.

Most watches take 16 to 24 mm. Men's watches are usually 18 to 24 mm and women's watches 10 to 18 mm, but we carry every width from 6 to 30 mm, including odd sizes like 13, 19 and 21 mm.

Step 2: How to find your watch band length

Band length is the total length of the two strap pieces added together, not counting the buckle. There are two easy ways to find the length you need.

Option 1: Measure your old strap

How to measure your old watch strap: lay both pieces end to end and measure the total length in millimetres, without the buckle
  • Measure both pieces and add them together, in millimetres or inches.
  • Do not include the buckle. Measure only the leather, rubber or metal part.
  • If it fits well, pick a similar length. If it is too long or too short, choose a different length from the chart below.

Option 2: Measure your wrist

How to measure your wrist for a watch band: wrap a flexible tape measure around your wrist and include the width of the watch case
  • Measure your wrist where you wear your watch, with a flexible tape measure or a piece of string and a ruler.
  • Allow for the watch case, which takes up part of the circle.
  • Between sizes? Go slightly longer. A two-piece strap can always be buckled smaller, never bigger.

Watch band length chart: Short to XXXL

This chart shows the average total length of Bandini bands in each length, excluding the buckle. Use it to match your old strap or to see which length suits your wrist.

Average total watch band length by size, excluding the buckle, in inches and millimetres
Band length Inches Millimetres
Short 6.5 in 165 mm
Standard (women's) 6.9 in 175 mm
Standard (men's) 7.1 in 180 mm
Extra Long, XL (women's) 7.25 in 184 mm
Extra Long, XL (men's) 8.25 in 210 mm
Double Extra Long, XXL (women's) 8.5 in 216 mm
Double Extra Long, XXL (men's) 9 in 229 mm
Triple Extra Long, XXXL (men's) 9.75 in 248 mm

Always check the size chart of the band you are interested in. Lengths vary by band model, so these are averages. Every Bandini product page has a size chart with that band's exact length, thickness and wrist fit.

Which length should I choose?

  • Standard fits most wrists.
  • Short suits smaller wrists, or a strap that sits on the last holes of a Standard band.
  • Extra Long, XXL and XXXL are for larger wrists. Choose one if your current strap is on its last hole or will not close comfortably. Our longest XXXL band fits wrists up to 9.5 inches (241 mm).

Not every band comes in every length. Most styles come in Standard, while Short, Extra Long, XXL and XXXL are made in selected styles only. Extra long lengths come in leather and metal expansion bands. The length options on each product page show what that band is available in.

Check your lug type before you order

Bandini bands attach with standard spring bars, which fit most watches. Some watches use non-standard lugs that a regular spring bar band will not fit. Check your watch before ordering a replacement band.

Non-standard watch lug types that regular spring bar watch bands may not fit: integrated lugs, proprietary connectors, hooded lugs, fixed bars and wire lugs
  • Integrated lugs: there is no standard lug opening, because the strap is built into the case.
  • Proprietary connectors: the watch uses brand-specific connectors instead of standard lugs.
  • Hooded lugs: the lug opening is covered or partly enclosed, which blocks a normal strap end.
  • Fixed bars: the watch has permanent bars instead of removable spring bars.
  • Wire lugs: thin wire lugs need special open-ended straps.

Apple Watch band sizes: how to know what size to order

Apple Watch bands are sized by the case size of your watch, not by lug width. You will find your case size engraved on the back of your watch, at the top right of the sensor (for example 41mm or 45mm).

Bandini bands for Apple Watch fit all Apple Watch series: Series 1 to 12, SE and Ultra. Every band comes in two sizes, so choose the one that matches your case:

If your case size is Choose this size option
38mm, 40mm, 41mm, or 42mm (Series 10, 11, 12) 42mm (Series 12/11/10) / 41mm / 40mm / 38mm
42mm (Series 1, 2, 3), 44mm, 45mm, 46mm, or 49mm (Ultra) 46mm / 49mm / 45mm / 44mm / 42mm (Series 3)

Have a 42mm watch? Check your series. A 42mm Series 10, 11 or 12 takes the smaller size, but a 42mm Series 1, 2 or 3 takes the larger size.

The pushpin connectors attach with no tools or tiny screws.

Watch band sizing questions

What size watch band do I need?

Match the band width to your watch's lug width (the gap between the lugs, in mm), and choose a length that suits your wrist. The width is often printed on the back of your old strap. Most watches take a 16 to 24 mm band, and most wrists fit a Standard length.

How do I measure lug width?

Measure the distance between the inside edges of the two lugs, where the strap attaches, using a ruler or calipers. Read it in millimetres. That number is your band width. Our printable ruler includes a lug width ruler if you do not have one.

Does the band length include the buckle?

No. Band lengths are the total of both strap pieces without the buckle. When you measure your old strap, leave the buckle out too.

How do I know if I need an extra long watch band?

If your current band is on its last hole, feels tight, or will not close, you need a longer band. Extra Long, XXL and XXXL bands are made for larger wrists, and our longest XXXL band fits wrists up to 9.5 inches (241 mm). Check the size chart on each band for its exact wrist fit.

What if I'm between two lengths?

Choose the slightly longer band. A two-piece strap can be buckled smaller, but it can't be made bigger.

What size band does my Apple Watch need?

Check the case size engraved on the back of your watch. For a 38mm, 40mm, 41mm or 42mm (Series 10, 11, 12) case, choose the smaller size. For a 42mm (Series 1, 2, 3), 44mm, 45mm, 46mm or 49mm Ultra case, choose the larger size.

Do Bandini bands fit every Apple Watch series?

Yes. Bandini bands for Apple Watch fit all Apple Watch series: Series 1 to 12, SE and Ultra. Just choose the band size that matches your case size.

Will a Bandini band fit my watch?

Bandini bands fit any watch with standard spring bar lugs, which is most watches. Integrated lugs, proprietary connectors, hooded lugs, fixed bars and wire lugs need special bands. Most Bandini bands come with two spring bars.
